Your First Class: What to Expect
- Some classes are held in a heated room (between 30 – 40 degrees).
- Stay in the room, even if it feels challenging.  That way we can keep an eye on you and make sure you are ok, and also to allow your body and mind to adjust to anything that feels a little uncomfortable.
- Breathe slowly and steadily through your nose, to calm your fight or flight response. Yoga really comes down to breath and finding stillness in the breath.
- Start in the middle or back of the room so you can watch everyone and see the teacher.
- Remember your first class, you may be like a baby Giraffe learning to walk – it’s ok you will get it and get there.
- Everyone in the room, is completely focused on their own practice, they have their own challenges too, so no-one is going to be watching you. Except for the teacher who will watch you to support and encourage you.
- We have mirrors. Not to pose and flex, but learn, understand and know your body better.
- If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or overwhelmed, and this is completely normal when you first start:Â Sit or lie down, watch the other students, enjoy listening to the teacher and watching students and rejoin when you are ready
- There is no pressure or expectation to keep up. Your practice is yours.
- Make sure you drink plenty of fluids after, it’s important you hydrate after your class.
- As a general rule we recommend for your first class at least, eating a light lunch and before 1pm, and keep your fluids up before your class throughout the day. As you practice and get into the routine, you’ll start to learn how your body responds best to food and fluids, both before and after class.
